Approximately 75% of the weekend is hands-on (in dyads or triads on the first day, or in small breakout groups on the second day with a 1:8 trainer-to-trainee ratio).  This will ensure that you get opportunities for supervised experience as both “counsellor” and “client”.

For more information regarding OEI, please see this 68-page APA Journal article:

Bradshaw, R. A., Cook, A., & McDonald, M. J. (2011). Observed & experiential integration (OEI): Discovery and development of a new set of trauma therapy techniques. Journal of Psychotherapy Integration, 21(2), 104-171. https://doi.org/10.1037/a0023966

For those with EMDR or Other Trauma Therapy Training:

From Marshall Wilensky, PhD RPsych:

“OEI provides a unique approach to working through dissociative symptoms so that EMDR can be done more effectively.  Client preparation and moving through blocked processing can be greatly assisted by this process.  I have learned very useful interventions from Rick and Audrey”.

From Rick Bradshaw, PhD RPsych:

Remember your practice before training in EMDR?  You probably had people telling you that your practice would be transformed, and that the relatively high cost of EMDR training was more than worth the expense because the training was so hands-on and practical, with small group supervised practice, along with video and live demos by expert therapists….and you now know that to be true!

OEI training is the same.  It is a whole weekend of small group skills training with dyads and triads on the first day, and a 1:8 ratio of trainers to trainees in “fishbowls” on the second day. OEI is applicable to so many types of clinical problems and client groups (including children, couples, and families), and can be added to your existing base of EMDR training, with these benefits:

A summary of the ways that OEI training can augment EMDR:

1. Many clients have transference projections (perceptual distortions) to (a) their therapists, (b) their spouses & other family members, and (c) their own reflections (in mirrors).  In the OEI training you will be taught how to assess for, and clear, these distortions quickly.

2. Many clients experience severe panic-related symptoms as they process traumas (nausea, throat constriction, hyperventilation, and bronchoconstriction).  In this OEI training you will be taught “Release Points” that we have discovered.  These are places that clients’ eyes can be guided to immediately relieve these states (clients can use them at home between sessions as well).

3. It is common during trauma processing for clients to experience dissociative “artefacts” (side effects) of trauma processing. These include headaches, tingling & numbness in hands/face/feet, drowsiness/ dizziness/lightheadedness, and sometimes visual distortions).  In this training for Observed & Experiential Integration (OEI) you will be taught how to clear these to facilitate trauma processing.

4. Sometimes clients evidence “glitches” in movement during eye saccades.  This training prepares you not only to identify and understand how to treat those complications in trauma processing, but also offers techniques to resolve those difficulties.

Hopefully these constitute sufficient reasons to attend the upcoming OEI training:

Sincerely,

Rick Bradshaw, PhD RPsych

Level II EMDR Practitioner
